ADSL2+ speed query

I'm having second thoughts about increasing my speed. By far the most data I use in the peak period is video streaming, but many streaming sites (such as 9Now) don't seem to allow you to choose the video quality. They just give you the best quality your speed can handle. They say this as though it's a good thing, but this doesn't take into account that I have a cap of 75 GB per month. I don't necessarily _want_ the best quality if my data will be used up more quickly.

If I can increase my speed but put a choke on it to reduce it at times of my choosing, then I'm all for speeding up my connection above its current ~6 mpbs. Otherwise, I'm not sure I want to.

Hi @solar1714

I understand. I've actually checked your account and the good news is we can provide you our award winning Unlimited data ADSL2+ with Homephone bundle.

Should you wish, I can arrange a call from one of our Account Specialists to discuss this with you further. Please let us know your best contact time and number via PM and we'll arrange this for you.

I'm still considering what you wrote earlier, but there are a number of aspects involved.

1. At present we don't know what needs to be done to get my speed better than 6 mbps, or how much better it can be. It could be my phone line limiting the speed and this might not be easy to correct. I'm happy enough with the amount of video streaming I can do at 75 GB/month. I'm just concerned that where I don't get to choose the video quality an increase in speed would be a reduction of viewing hours.

2. Cost is important. I chose TPG and my current account because I was satisfied with the data cap for the cost. I'm probably not willing to increase my total cost (landline plus internet), which brings me to the last point.

3. How the cost and support of my landline would change if I took up your suggested option. I thought Telstra owned the line, so I assume I'd still be paying them rent for it. If so, my total cost would probably rise. I make very few calls on that line so not much can be saved in call cost.

Hi @solar1714

The quality and the distance from the exchange mainly affects the internet speeds for ADSL2+ connection. Nevertheless, the option to choose the video quality can still depends on the site your accessing.

Nevertheless, I can have one of our Account Specialists discuss options that would best suit your needs should you wish to check out our plans for the Unlimited data ADSL2+ with homephone bundles.

After over two months with this service I just discovered that the second phone that I thought I had disconnected was not disconnected after all. Now it's really disconnected and my speed has jumped from 6.3 to 12.5 mbps.

Hi @solar1714 yes the less load across the line the better for ADSL, I've found that different models of ADSL filter/splitters can have a significant affect on line rate as well, you should have a filter/splitter that's labeled ADSL 2+ to ensure it's designed to operate at the higher frequencies that ADSL 2+ uses as opposed to the older ADSL specification.

A good quality splitter/filter will have hardly any effect on speed when compared to just the bare modem only connected to the line.
