NBN50 speed lower than typical evening speed

Hi there,

I have just updated my nbn12 to nbn50, however through testing speed multiple times, the speed is generally around 35+. I wonder if there is something wrong as this is not close to typical evening speed as advertised.

Thank you.

Also, FYI, that was the speed during off-peak hours. The tested evening download speed was 20, which is half of what is expected.

Hi @hzwkule,

The actual speeds for NBN services may be slower and vary due to many factors including type/source of content being downloaded, hardware and software configuration, the number of users and performance of interconnecting infrastructure not operated by TPG.

Devices connected by Wi-Fi may experience slower speeds than those connected by Ethernet cable.

We'd recommend having a read of this community article, which may help you check if the speed you're getting at the moment is within acceptable range.

This also includes troubleshooting on how the speed can be improved.

Furthermore, we can only provide you with an accurate speed assessment post activation.

Contributing factors to speed on FTTN are definitely distance from your connected node.

We write to all new FTTN customers shortly after activation with their line sync speed and provide options for either upgrade or downgrade based on results. We provide options to shift plans or cancel if speeds are not met.

We want to make sure that you're getting the most out of your NBN plan which is why we've undertaken a review of your sync speed and we have sent an email regarding this on May 2019.

As per checking, your line is only capable of getting 48Mbps sync speed. You can consider downgrading your plan, but since you mentioned that you're only getting around 35Mbps, the articles we have provided above may help improve it.

Feel free to search community for help or contact us and we'd be glad to assist you.

Hi Riezl

Your reply to @hzwkule has a link to "Slow speed issue" troubleshooting. The TPG web page that this link takes you to has a reference to the "Minimum Acceptable Speed" for each of TPG's NBN plans.

Who has determined what are the Minimum Acceptable Speeds for TPG's NBN plans?

Were these Minimum Acceptable Speeds determined by TPG themselves, or by the NBN Co., or by the ACCC?

Can you please clarify this.

Thank you.
