Bad Routing = High Ping?

Hi im currently having latency issues to singapore even with vpn and it was like that a few days ago, normal ping is around 90 on singapore valve servers and 80 with exitlag vpn on dota 2

but recently when i use the VPN my ping sky rockets to 200+ and regular ping is 120ms now so i looked up my ip and its shows im located on NSW, but im from adelaide SA, so what's going on i hope you can fix this asap because it wasnt like this before

Hi @kimkelvin . It would be useful to see the ping and tracert to the game server (host name or ip address) from your computer, and to the game server when you are connected to the VPN.

hello David, it seems i cant do a tracert to valve servers anymore as valve uses relays now
i've also searched for provided ips on steamcommunity but the one for singapore isnt working
but ive seen something wrong with my routing that it jumps from
ADL to Perth and looping back to Sydney which prolly has the worst latency going out of AU to SG servers.
I have friends living on sydney and thats what their normal latency is 120ms
while me before this issue happened is only 80ms and i think is because from ALD to PERTH then goes straight to SG and doesnt loop back to Syd.

Tried to do a tracert :

tracerttracert

I followed this and the results are below

relay.png

no vpn:

no vpnno vpnwith vpn:

w/ vpnw/ vpn

also it still doesn't explain why when i look up my ip my relay is on a different state im not running any vpns what so ever on my pc the one i use hooks up to game only

EDIT: i did another lookup for the sydney ip on 6th line in the tracert

this what my ping used to be and it proves to around 79-80ms with the exitlag vpn
sadly i cant use my vpn with cmd and do a tracert as it only hooks to the game

@kimkelvin . Where is your VPN provider located?
Do you know the hostname or ip address of the server? You can try ping and tracert to there to see if TPG has good routing to it.

Regarding the 2 Relay displays:
Remote host is "sgp", so Singapore?
The 2 ip addresses below are in Sydney so there must be a small delay between Sydney and Singapore.
Primary router: do these addresses change on different days or are they always the same?
The relay servers listen on ports 27015-27200, same as game servers. (UDP not TCP apparently.)
Do ping and tracert to each ip address from your computer and with VPN running.
This is from my computer in Sydney.

.
14 5 ms 5 ms 4 ms 103-10-125-155.valve.net [103.10.125.155]
.
This has info about ping times shown in displays:

On the tracert in the picture, there is a big delay between line 3 and 4, both in Sth Aust. This might be a TPG problem.

sadly i cannot run a tracert hooked to my CMD because i use exitlag and it only hooks to the game itself and not to my whole pc Smiley Sad

it looks like this and only effects the game

before i use to get the ping displayed on what is in the UI of my VPN from 120 down to 85

tracertwithvpn.png

but it seems now something is wrong with the general routing as i it bounces me from
ADL > PERTH > SYD > SG and not ADL > PERTH > SG
i've known for a long time that SYD has bad latency going to singapore but perth doesnt.

this is the connection details while running the game with the vpn

@kimkelvin . So how does this work?

Exitlag display shows it is using a server in Singapore and a game server, actually a game relay server, in Sydney. The game display shows the same relay server and actual game server in Singapore.

Your network path is Singapore, Sydney, Singapore. That explains longer game ping times when using Exitlag.

Exitlag needs a server in Australia at least.

In Exitlag, when you select a game, are you able to force it to use a game with relay server in Singapore?

In the tracert to game relay servers, there is a delay getting to Melbourne, another delay getting to Sydney. A direct link Adelaide-Sydney would be nice but maybe can't be done. Or there is such a link but it is down.

Hi @kimkelvin ,

Let me help run some tests to check your connection. Could you flick me a message with your details also perform a ping test and tracert on the server based on SG without VPN send me the result via text-format.

How to send a PM?

Regards,

i restart my router today when i went to work and tested it again when i got back, manage to do tracert now on the ip but 1 failed badly and cant finish and one routes me to Hongkong before flinging me back to Singapore
