Getting wildly inconsistent and often low download and upload speeds with TPG FTTB.

Hello,

FTTB has rated download speeds of ~90mbps during evenings, and my understanding that speeds would range from 50-100mbps. I have been experiencing performance more in line with ADSL2 performance however.

I have not been able to find any solutions searching this forum and by running through a myriad of troubleshooting methods. This included checking modem/router positioning, modem restarting, using a wifi analyser, playing with different 5ghz channels, fixed and wifi connections with equipment that is rated for download rates much higher than TPG FTTB advertised, checking for firmware, checking my bitfender firewall, disabling unused networking adapters. I cannot explain the extremely inconsistent performance from my end.

In my past ADSL2 account with TPG, downloads for example would be generally consistent range, but with FTTB I am often experiencing ~18mbps even in off peak hours, and then seeing a weird spike in the next hour or so when I run another speed test that will show speeds within the advertised range and then back down again.

Heres some speedtest results:

The inconsistency is also reflected when I download from other clients, like steam where I might see spikes into the advertised range of downloads speeds, which last for varying amounts of time (ranging from a few seconds to 10 minutes), but it's more common for the download speed in steam to hover at around 16.8mbps, regardless of the time of the day.

I understand downloading from different servers will see a level of variance in terms of results, yet I know people with similar connections can expect to see better performance than what I am seeing currently, and I have seen glimpses of what that performance could look like on my end.

I am at the end of my ability to troubleshoot on my own any further, so help/insight would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

Steamy

Hi @SteamyEarlGrey

Welcome to TPG Community!

We were able to locate your account using your community details, but was not able to detect any fault.

The sync speed of your modem is within specification, in which the slow speed is questionable.

Are you using a WiFi or a wired connection? Sorry, but we can't view the speed test that you've shared. It is better if you share the screenshot of the result.

If you are using a WiFi connection, are you able to test the speed via Wired? This will help us narrow down the issue that you are experiencing.

Hello BasilDV,

Thank you for your reply.

I'm using a high speed wifi connection, however I have tried a wired setup and the results were the same in terms of download speeds, and the overall performance profile I am noting.

I'll attach some jpeg files containing the data from the entire run of speed tests I have done since last night, which I exported as a spreadsheet. As I noted in my initial post, past experience with TPG internet would showed limited variance when doing speed testing, however the results I am seeing currently vary considerably.

Kind regards

Hi @SteamyEarlGrey,

We understand that our Tech team has been in touch and was guided to troubleshoot the issue.

It appears that you are getting a good speed with your TPG FTTB service (90-93 Mbps DL/30-37 Mbps UP). It seems that the bandwidth sharing within your devices is giving you a different speed test result every time. Also, the wireless signal is prone to interference which causes the speed to fluctuate.

We've created some article that will guide you on how to improve your WiFi network and troubleshoot the slow speed issue.
