Slow ADSL2+ speeds

Hi Guys,

I've been having terrible speeds with TPG lately.  Could you please have a look into it?  Not sure whether its a contention issues on your side due to the increased users, or whether its a recent fault on my line?

Details of plan below:

ADSL2+ 500GB 20110711

I'm lucky to get 3.0MBps down and 0.5Mbps up.

Completely unacceptable.  Tested across two different ADSL2+ modems with a lan connection.

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the sync speeds of your Internet connection.

ADSL2+ connections allow sync rates of up to 24 megabits per second.

The maximum rate you can achieve is determined by several factors:

- The wiring within your premises.

- The type of modem you are using.

- The way that the modem is connected to the telephone socket.

- Other devices on the telephone line.

- The length and quality of the telephone line from the exchange to your premises.

Although we cannot change the distance between your premises and the exchange, we can manipulate some of the other aspects of your connection in order to achieve higher line speeds.

If your service has previously connected at higher rates, try some of these steps to try and improve your line speed:

1) Check the quality of your telephone line.

Audible noise on a phone line can dramatically reduce ADSL2+ line speeds.

- Connect a telephone handset to your line and make a test phone call.

- Ensure that the line is clear of any noise or crackling.

2) Isolate the line and replace the cable.

Note: If there is an alarm system connected to your telephone line, please ask your alarm company to confirm it is filtered.

Phone cables quite commonly develop faults which can impair your modem's ability to connect properly. Additionally, phone extension cables weaken the ADSL signal on the line and cables longer than 3 metres can significantly degrade connection quality.

- Remove all telephone devices, including handsets, fax machines, filters, double adaptors, and extension cables.

- Plug the modem directly into a wall socket on a new, short telephone cable.

- Check the sync rates reported by your modem to see whether there is an improvement.

- If you find that your sync speeds have improved, reconnect your devices one at at time.

- Check the sync rate of your modem after reconnecting each device and this will help you to identify which one is causing the problem.

3) Test an alternate wall socket.

- If you have multiple wall sockets at your premises, try the modem on an alternate socket.

- Keep the line isolated whilst testing.

- Review the sync rate of your modem on the alternate socket.

If your modem has better speeds on a different socket, it might suggest you have a faulty wall socket in your premises or a fault with internal wiring.

If your service continues to experience speed issues after completing all of these steps, please reply with the results of the testing you have completed.

Hi Karl,

Used a different socket -- same thing kind of happening.

Line sounds good on a voice call.  Clear.

I have only the ADSL2+ modem connected, and another wireless phone.  Both hooked into the line filter.  Tried two different line filters also.

No notable change.  Occasionally will connect to a faster speed.  Used to get much faster speeds with TPG.  

Unless something has changed in the phone line.  Not sure what else to do.

Lots of drop outs also of late.  I purchased a new adsl modem, and it seems to be doing the same thing.

Find a screenshot of line details below, SNR / ATTENUTATION.

That last screenshot you were getting 11.8Meg I would say that is passing. When I checked the other day you were only get 1Meg. What change did you make? What speed do you normally get?

Honestly.

Couldnt tell you -- I unplugged my cordless phone -- That's back in now.

I've had that cordless phone plugged in for the past 3 years  (unless something has gone awry in the past month).

I've also experienced quite a few drop out -- see log file below.

Thanks for the update. That does seem like a lot of dropouts. If the speed drops and you continue to get dropouts try removing the phone again. If that fixes it maybe replace the filter on the phone.

Yeah.

This is where it gets messy -- I've used two different line filters, two different short RJ11s cable runs and two wall sockets.. 

Probably should have written it all down each time I test a new setup.

Regardless, I've gone back to my old adsl modem to see if maybe its something with the newer DLINK.

I've plugged an older tplink adsl modem, using the same socket, same line filter + rj11 cable.

Wide difference in  (-) link speed, SNR + attenuation Db.  Assuming this can be attributed to the difference in modulation algorithm.

The tplink seems to have connected to an older ADSL modulation, (ADSL_G.dmt) hence the reduced link speed.   Not ADSL2+.

I'd just be happy with it being stable at this rate for the moment.

Perhaps see if your team can have a look at it from your end please?

That was the D-LINK.

The TP-LINK (TD-w8968) is on the following modulation.

Due to the timeouts, wonderinf if its a backhaul issue @ the Dslam.  Are other users in East KEW, VIC exchange having difficulties?

These drop outs have been worst the past couple of days -- but really only started during lockdown for covid.

Anyway, at least its giving me something to think about while bored at home
