nbn / archer vr 1600 v connection problem

My nbn modem shows all green lights (power, upstream, downstream, online). The tpg-supplied tp-link archer vr1600 v router shows a green light for the wan connection to the nbn modem, but no light for the internet connection.

The archer vr1600 c status page shows that no pppoe connection was established. The pppoe connection setup details look alright to me and router appears to continue trying to connect via pppoe, but fails persistently.


Any ideas?
