I anticipate to  change from existing  TPG ADSL  to TPG NBN bundle (plan not yet  decided). Will a 8port modem instead of 4port modem be available for the changeover.

Hi @Timhopeter the supplied modem / router will have 4 Lan ports available as per most others available on the market, you can expand that easily by adding an Ethernet switch and connecting it to any of those 4 ports, you can create an additional 4 gigabit ports by adding a 5 port switch for under $20 available at most computer parts retailers.

Thanks for that advice, just wondering whether an old 10/100Mbps ethernet switch will be suitable for the new NBN service operating on HFC network from our street. Will it be necessay to buy a higher speed switch? I have heard that a router is better than a switch, is it correct?

Hi @Timhopeter a 10/100 switch will be more than adequate for general use, it will exceed anything your HFC can deliver, you should only have one router in use and you'll already have that in your included VR1600v modem/router, the LAN ports on combined modem/routers are simply an inbuilt Ethernet switch.

One of the advantages of using a separate additional switch is that you can install it in your home theatre or lounge room to supply Internet to a smart TV or media streaming device and game console etc by using just one Ethernet cable from the modem router to your switch.
