As our just installed TPG modem has to be running in order to use our phone we then have to leave the modem on 24-7. Is this normal practise as the modem runs quite warm?

Yes the modem needs to be left on if you wish to be able to use your phone.
It is normal for the modem to be warm also.
There is no way around needing to leave the modem on to be able to have the phone ready for use.
