Internet speed issue

Got the new router tplink VX420, finally getting the speed that I pay for as the old router was no good and was out of warranty. However, the consistency of the connection with the new router is actually worse so it performs worse when gaming and overall usage than the old router which was faulty. Something just doesn't add up. I am really annoyed with the current situation and actually want my $99+$10 for the shipping back. Even considering changing ISP.

We'd like to check on this further as surely the new modem/router is an upgrade to the old one.

Are you using a WiFi or a Wired connection? Are you experiencing the issues on a specific time or random?

What troubleshooting have you tried so far?
