Replacing Archer VR1600v V1 with Deco M9

Hi there,

I'm a total novice, so please excuse my ignorance.

I'm looking at trying to improve my overall connection stability and having a mesh wifi network for our house.

I'm on a cable NBN Superfast plan.

I'm looking at getting the TP Link Deco M9 mesh system.

My question is, can I do away with the Archer entirely? On the new plans page on the TPG website, they have BYO modem plans and for the superfast, the M9 appears to be an approved modem?? does this mean it can take care of the modem fuctionality too?

IS is as simple as repalcing my Archer or an I better off using the Deco as a wireless system only and keep the Archer for Routing?

Updated: Just found the Deco BYO instructions:

https://community.tpg.com.au/t5/Modems-and-Devices/How-to-set-up-TP-Link-Deco-BYO-modem-for-NBN/td-p...

Would this work for me??

Any advice would be apprciated.

Cheers!

@antlee13 . You've mentioned the BYO plan. That requires you to change from your current plan to a BYO plan. No cost but a bit of downtime.

Since you don't want the phone service, you could just use the Deco with your current plan (without using Archer).

Staying with your current plan and using Deco, there is an extra setup step. Set VLAN ID=2 for internet function in the IPTV/VLAN section.

This link has the setup for VLAN ID for a different model but in a similar way.

Hi @antlee13 . The M9 cannot be used on FTTB/N because it does not have RJ11 connector needed for that connection. You need the Archer as well.

You can connect M9 to the NBN box.

BYO plan does not have phone service so no need to use TPG supplied router.

Thanks David, yeah we're an HFC setup, so i can run an ethernet cable from the NBN box to the Deco, right?

@antlee13 . That's right. On BYO plan, M9 setup is easy.

You could use the Archer as a cabled extender to the M9 if you want extra ethernet somewhere.
