Setting up a different modem

My modem recently died on me, no lights were on, I fiddled with the power cord and tried to turn it off and on, nothing worked. I don’t have the money to order a new one so my mother-in-law gave me her old TPG modem to plug in but I am unsure how to set it up. It is the exact same modem as the one I had before. I have plugged it in and the wifi appears on my devices but the internet light is off and nothing loads. Is the there a way for me to set this modem up or do I have to purchase a new one?
