Ported number not working on new activated sim

I have had my number port over from Vodafone. I waited for the confirmation from Voda to say that my service had been disconnected and then inserted the new tpg sim and waited for my number/sim to be activated and it has. But I can't send or receive anything from my existing mobile number. I've tried fiddling with phone settings to set the send/receive settings with my number but they're either showing only my apple ID or they're showing a brand new number that i assume was originally associated with the new sim. 
Please advise why my existing number isn't working on the new sim despite the text message saying that the sim AND number is activated.
