Can I connect PC to the modem via WiFi?

Sorry if this is elementary stuff, but: I will want to have my PC in a different room from my only phone socket. The cables (cable from phone to modem and Ethernet cable from modem to PC) are nowhere near long enough, and in any case I don't want cables draped everywhere. Is it possible to simply have the PC communicate with the modem and Internet via WiFi, i.e. not requiring an Ethernet cable connection, and is this recommended? How would I go about setting this up?

Edit: Solved (I believe). It was simply a matter of telling my PC to search for wireless networks, just as I do for a smartphone or a tablet.
