TPG routing to Japan (Tokyo) is not optimal (June 2023)

Once again the routing to Japan is not optimal. Traffic appears to be going from Australia -> USA -> Japan and now takes 280+ msec rather than the normal 160-170 msec. This started around 29/05/2023.

This has happened in the past. See my article "TPG routing to Japan (Tokyo) is not optimal" from 23-09-2022 10:39 AM for more information.

The issue can easily be seen with a trace route to 47.91.24.239.

When will this resolved?

Thanks.

Hi BasilDV,

Well I have just been told that it is all cool and normal to route traffic to Japan via the USA and that I need to prove to the TPG networking team that it is not. The TPG networking team needs to consult a map - the optimal networking to Japan is not via the USA, it is via the the Japan-Guam-Australia North Cable System.

@BasilDV . User pdpanozzo posted the proper routing last December. Looks to be a direct connection to Japan.

Is there a contractual or financial reason for TPG changing the routing?

Hi @localjrw ,

Send us your details so we can coordinate this with our Engineering Team for investigation.

Looks like it is resolved now. Trace route to Japan is 166 msec.

Hi,

This issue appears to be back again with traffic to Japan routing via USA and is over 300ms (internode nbn customer).

Started again a few days ago, its not an issue with my internet connection, multiple friends on TPG group ISPs are experiencing it.
