Porting phone line number

Our NBN service was connected on 20 April & TPG advised that our phone line is in process of being ported over from Telstra. Also advised that while this is happening, we will not be able to receive calls, but people are still successfully calling us which is puzzling?? Telstra has advised the the phone line is still connected to them. Will we be advised by TPG when the phone line is ported over? Also will there be a voicemail message service (similar to Telstra's 101 service) when it is ported over to TPG?
