As Alan says, the RJ11 plug fits into RJ45 socket. Connect the VR1600 DSL port to the ethernet wall socket using telephone cable. See what happens.

The tab on the RJ11 must locate on the slot in the middle of the RJ45 socket. If the socket has been wired correctly as a DSL outlet then it will succeed.  You really need to know what the previous occupant had.
