Delays in receiving email

Like a few others here I have had delays in receiving emails, including text-only emails. 

I usually use Thunderbird but when delays have occurred the message has not arrived in the postoffice either. 

The longest I have noticed is 3-4 hours so far but that's long enough to be a problem. 

Everyone else seems to have been sorted out by PMing the postmaster so I can't find any clues from previous threads.
