I have a home hardwired LAN. I accepted the new Ultrafast TPG offer $99.99 for a $149 plan, activated 30 Aug 21. My WIN 10 desktop machine consistently shows speedtest of Download 305Mbps & Upload 35Mbps. My WIN 7 desktop linked via a Linksys SD205 switch shows 71Mbps Download and 25Mbps upload. The switch is rated up to 200Mbps per port. Is the difference due to the switch?

Hi @rayge158 . The Linksys 5-, 8-, or 16-Port 10/100 Switch has 10/100 speed ports. Your Win7 computer probably has gigabit ethernet port. Can you connect the Win7 computer directly to the wifi router for a test? Time to upgrade the switch.

Hi David64,

Disconnected the switch today and directly connected WIN 7 desktop to the router. Speedtests only show tiny improvement, WIN 7 PC hits 80Mbps Download and 25Mbps upload speed when patched into the VR1600V router. Difference compared to WIN 10 HPZ440 pc is still a mystery.

@rayge158 . Can you check the settings of the ethernet adapter. Control Panel, Network, Change adapter settings. Check that speed is 1Gbps Full duplex, whatever is fastest. Also, it has Cat 5E/6 cable. The older hardware might not reach same speed as the Win10.

Thank you for your advice. I have checked the network adaptor settings. It is set to 1Gbps full duplex and Autodetect.

Does it need to Forced Slave Mode?

@rayge158 . My Win7 doesn't have that. I read about it but don't understand it. It has some effect on speed. Give it a go.

@rayge158 . One thing to consider is the relative performance of each computer. Win7 computer must be at least 6 years old. There is number of CPUs;  cpu clock speed; memory speed.

Use Task Manager Performance and Networking tabs to check no background activity.

Try these simple speed tests:

ping -n 9 192.168.1.1

ping -n 9 -l 65500 192.168.1.1

You could try with multiple command windows at same time.
