Voip quality

I recently had TPG NBN installed and immediately lost my old telephone system.... problem is the quality of voip is .....well simply garbage compared to my old Telstra service. And yes it is new cordless digital compatible etc etc (DECT ). How do I improve the voip quality? Do I need to invest in ATA ....this way I can use my other telephones .
