We are cirrently using an older Netgear modem for our home wifi internet. Recently, it has started dropping in and out. The Netgear modem is about 5-6 years old now. Can I just buy a new Netgear modem from Officeworks and connect it or should I get a new registered modem through TPG? I am assuming that it is a modem issue given the age of the unit.

You can definitely get a modem of your choice so long as it's compatible with the type of connection you have (ADSL2+/NBN).
I would suggest though that we check your connection first before doing so to ensure and rule out the possible cause of the drop outs.
