Hello, I'm also having the exact same issues as above with my TP-Link Archer VR1600v. Overheating and discoloured as well as some intermittant instability with internet wifi connection.

I have a voice phone account with my internet.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated

I am exactly the same and have the same modem. Noticed it last year. Never had an issue with other modems before.
I am with another ISP now but I think that I should be able to get a new modem for free?
