Printer settings affected by change to 5G network (iiNet Sagemcom modem)

Switch to iiNet 5G network seems to have affected my Brother MFC (9335CDW) printer settings. MFC is connected to 5G network as per Network Configuration report. MacBook Air running Apple OS Monterey 12.6.3 is connected to same network but no longer recognises the printer under its usual name. Have been through every step of Brother troubleshooting available, including personal e-chat during which they said the MFC is correctly connected. Printer will work if connected by USB to Mac. Wirelessly, printer can be added to Printers and Scanners on Mac by using it's IP Address. VueScan scanning software can no longer recognise Brother MFC but can scan using Brother iPrint & Scan, the app suggested by Brother as a solution. AirPrint is no longer functional. Anyone else?

Any home smart appliances/devices will not work with 5G home broadband as it comes with CG-NAT
 

What is CG-NAT and how does it affect Home Wireless Broadband Services?


Techy types should be aware that Home Wireless Broadband uses CG-NAT. Carrier-grade NAT (Network Address Translation) is a type of network that assigns services with a private IP address, instead of a dynamic public IP address. Our network will then translate that private address into a public address. This means that the following items (which depend on internal NAT) will not work on Home Wireless Broadband:

 

Port forwarding985
Smart Home systems (e.g. accessing security camera footage remotely, home automation and printers)
Remote Access (i.e. accessing your home computer or devices from another location)

 


The only way to for the device to work with the internet is to switch back to NBN connection. We can arrange our Plan change team to contact you to help us do this.

@Anonymous . Have I mentioned to you and/or @BasilDV about this. CG-NAT stops a user from connecting in to their home network from the internet. It doesn't stop operations between devices on the local LAN.

BTW, is this user with TPG or iiNet?

 

Hi @BobC . Does the MFC connect to 2.4GHz or 5GHz wifi?

When it does connect, does it get an ip address?

No problems with Mac accessing internet?

You say MFC can be added to Mac using its ip address. Can the Mac print to MFC in this case?

Can the Mac ping the MFC?

Shared devices like printers should have a fixed ip address in the router, eg 192.168.1.9. You may have to adjust the printer address in the Mac printer properties for the printer name.

Thanks Shane. I don't understand the technical side but hear what you're saying. Upon consideration the gains outweigh the losses. Untidy printer settings, loss of AirPrint and not being able to use my favorite scanning tool (VueScan) is annoying sure but on the bright side I was able to get rid of a heap of legacy equipment installed over the years by various providers, seeming over the top of each other, the coverage throughout our two level home is better, to the point we no longer need our mesh system, and speeds have improved. Thanks again.

Thanks David. I don't have your level of technical knowledge and don't want to waste your time. Have accepted the current solution.
