Get online support
Hi,
This is a long-term issue with the 5Ghz wifi on the VX220-G2V modem, which I have posted about on the forum before:
https://community.tpg.com.au/t5/Modems-and-Devices/VX220-G2v-5ghz-Wi-Fi-is-broken/m-p/144310#M20425
I've been through a number of troubleshooting steps, both myself and with TPG support, eg, reseting the modem, changing band steering, changing power settings, even getting replacement VX220-G2V devices. Ultimately with no resolution.
The last person I spoke to at TPG, a nice lady who I spent about 2 hours on the phone with, ultimately admitted that we had tried everything available and that this was a known issue with the device. At the time the VX220-G2V was the only model available, and she had no way of sending out anything other than another VX220-G2V. Given I am now on my 3rd VX220-G2V there was no point in getting another one.
However, I checked the TPG website this morning and I saw that the VX220-G2V has been removed from the current list of modems being sent to customers and has been replaced with the VX420-G2V. So I thought now would be a good time to re-raise this issue as it is still a problem.
Hi @djmulls888 . For testing, turn Band Steering off (different SSID names), use max power setting, set wifi security to WPA/WPA2 and AES. The other wifi settings should be left at default.
Using your 5G wifi device next to vx220, does it detect your 5G SSID?
Is there an error message on your wifi device when you try to connect?
With Band steering off the same issue continues to occur. The modem is advertising the SSID on 5Ghz and laptops, phones and other devices can see it being advertised, but during the association process part of the handshake fails. Existing connected devices continue to work normally, but any other device trying to associate with the modem are unable to connect.
At first I thought it might be a DHCP setting issue with rotating MAC addresses on most devices these days, but the 2.4GHz continues to work and DHCP reservations have not been exhausted. To be sure I also disabled the MAC rotation and it made no difference. It also doesn't help just using 2.4GHz as I have some devices that are 5Ghz only. This means when the issue occurs, the only option I have is to turn off the router and back on, disrupting all devices on the network.
@djmulls888 . Making devices use their real MAC address is better for management.
Once a device fails to connect to the 5ghz wifi, can a device still connect to the 2.4 wifi, even a dual band device which failed to connect to 5ghz?
In the last sentence, what do you hope to achieve by restarting the router?
Does the router behave any differently after restart?
Are any 5ghz devices configured to use specific ip address rather than address from DHCP?
Do you have Android devices with Intelligent Wi-Fi and "Connectivity labs"?
All devices fail to connect to the 5Ghz once the issue starts occuring. They can connect to the 2.4Ghz wifi, but that doesn't help for the devices I have that only use 5GHz.
Restarting the router gets the 5GHz wifi working again. I have tried just turning the 5GHz wifi off and on via the management interface, but that has no effect. Literally turning the router off and on again is the only way I have found to get the 5GHz wifi working again. This was also the view of TPG support when I spoke to them.
As for wifi monitoring software, yes I have used this. Again the modem is advertising wifi and showing a good signal stregth, but full handshake association fails.
@djmulls888 . After restarting router, can any devices connect to 5ghz wifi, or, none ever?
If some can, is it the same ones each time, or random (one might connect one time but not the next)?
How many devices do you want to connect to 5ghz wifi?
If you don't use the TPG VOIP function, you could buy some other brand router.
Do you have a spare router? It can be used for just the 5ghz wifi or both bands; disable the VX220 wifi..
After rebooting the router all devices can connect to the 5GHz. Usually for a period of 1 to 3 days and then the issue reoccurs again. Currently there are 4 to 6 devices connected to the 5Ghz wifi.
@djmulls888 . After the next router restart, can you check periodically the Client List in the router. Does the list match what you expect are the devices that are connected?
Or are there more entries than devices connected?
Do your wifi devices normally stay connected all the time, or do some connect and disconnect frequently?
You should open a new thread since this is rather old now. Explain the problem with 5ghz wifi and include a link to this thread:
