Hi Shane

It's about time you moderators worked out the latest firmware levels for your supplied routers. I changed to NBN recently and received a VR1600. Its firmware was the level indicated by this user. Sometime in the last week or so, the firmware has been changed to Firmware Version:0.1.0 0.9.1 v5006.0 Build 200810 Rel.53181n for Hardware Version:Archer VR1600v v2 00000000. I didn't ask for it to be changed. This new version is from probably August 2020. Now you're telling this user that build 190228 is the latest.

I notice also that the VPN function has been removed, which is why I was not going to mention about firmware level on my brand new router.

So, how can I get build 190228 back on my router?

I copied the following from my post in a thread running the last few months about missing VPN function.

https://community.tpg.com.au/t5/Broadband-Internet/Missing-VPN-Setup-on-Archer-VR1600v-v2/td-p/78055

That's a bit of a brush-off to users who use the VPN function. There are a few threads recently about the VPN option going missing.

How does the VPN option affect "network and customer security"?

And who is "our vendor" who took part in that decision?

When the issue of the missing VPN option was raised, even you did not know the reason.

Could he reply to my post in this thread.

PS. I note that Shane has answered a more recent thread on firmware versions.

Hi @david64 ,

This has been raised to our Engineering Team for clarification on which of the two firmwares  ( Build 200810 Rel.53181n and Build 190228 ) is the latest. We'll post any updates on this thread once it becomes available.

On the other hand, In the best interests of our network, our vendor and security team have chosen to disable the VPN Server functionality on the TPLink VR1600. We recommend to use or install 3rd party software on your PC/server to use VPN servers.

Regards,

Hi Shane.

Obviously 200810 is the latest because it doesn't have the VPN function; 190228 did.

I'd like to know more about the reasoning for the security issue. If the function is not activated and remote management is not enabled, where is the security risk? You should try for a start to force users to switch to OpenVPN which uses a certificate.

I'd also like to know why my firmware was updated without being asked for. Is TPG doing a bulk update for its hundreds of thousands of VR1600?
