Get online support
FTTB, PPPoE, with the modem router, ASUS DSL-AX-82U
I have to disable 802.1Q to get the internet, but will have no public ip like 10.0.148.110
If I enable 802.1Q (set VLAN ID to 2), I can not get the connection and can see log errors like:
---
May 5 16:08:05 miniupnpd[1867]: SendNATPMPPublicAddressChangeNotification: cannot get public IP address, stopping
May 5 16:08:06 zcip client: configured 169.254.198.127
May 5 16:08:28 pppd[3365]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
---
I assume this is caused by Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT). Am I able to opt out this CGNAT, to get a dynamic public ip?
Hi @chaoyusyd . Are you on Bundled NBN/VOIP plan, or Data Only plan?
Since your internet works with no VLAN ID, you could be Data only plan.
Where do you see the "10" address you mentioned?
Hi @david64 It is data only plan. I can see the10.x.x.x IP in my modem-router's WAN IP after PPPoE get connected.
@chaoyusyd . Do you live in an apartment building?
Are you on NBN FTTB or TPG FTTB? With the latter, I believe the router connects to a small box which connects to the telephone wall socket.
Has it always been like this or did it change recently?
Your connection could be misconfigured in NBN or TPG. You should get a proper ip address.
CGNAT is only used on 4G and 5G wireless broadband.
Hi @david64 I thought NBN FTTB and TPG FTTB are the same thing? The email from TPG says
"Activation for your service has now been confirmed:
NBN Technology: NBN Fibre To The Building (FTTB).
...your new TPG NBN service is active"
@chaoyusyd . Seems to be NBN's FTTB. Still up to TPG to fix.
I've included moderators here.

Thanks @david64 Now I can get dynamic public ip like 121.x.x.x, which is good, though I didn't change any settings. But still enabling 802.1Q will not get PPPoE connected. According to TPG Broadband Settings List | TPG Support, I should enable 802.1Q

@chaoyusyd . Data only plan does not need VLAN ID (802.1q).
Strange that it is now a proper address.
Out of interest, go to whatismyip.com
It will show your public wan ip address which should match what is in the router.
@david64 now both whatismyip.com and router's WAN IP show the same public ip like 121.44.xx.xx
So if data only plan dont need to enable 802.1Q, then I assume it's working properly now and I should have no issue?
@chaoyusyd . Check occasionally that the router has a proper wan ip address.
Because it is dynamic, it can change every number of weeks due to NBN maintenance or something at TPG.
