I'm not having any success seting up a new modem (TP-LINK DECO X20 DSL). The setup app proceeds up until trying to connect to the internet and then fails. I need to factory reset the modem each time. How do I find out if I have the correct username and password for my PPPoE connection? I have tried every password I have ever used for my TPG account, including the one I used to login to my account and access this board, but still cant setup a connection. Before taking the brand new modem back for a refund as faulty, I'd like to check I am actually using the correct details. My old modem doesn't show me the password, just a row of dots. If I change my TPG account password, will this also change the modem connection password?

Update: I had really good support from TPG who came and did a very thorough job investigating our connection line. And as suspected, it was indeed the Powerline Adapters that were causing the frequent dropouts. When the Adapters are turned off, the dropouts stop and when turned back on they resume again. Not sure why they stated playing up so recently. Did some research and it appears this is a known issue with TP-Link powerline adapters and they even have a user selectable setting for each adapter to switch it to a lower operating frequency that is supposed to cause less interference with the VDSL connection of the modem (that uses a similar frequency). Sadly, changing this setting had no effect at all on dropout frequency. So the adapters have all been removed and that has cured the internet connectivity issue. Will be looking at Mesh WiFi as a possible alternative to get a stronger signal to the back of the house. Thanks Shane and Aubrey for your help, much appreciated. Mark

Thanks Aubrey, Do you know if AC Powerline Adapters can affect the DSL connections at the router? The WiFi signal from our router is a bit weak at the back of the house and so we have used one of these adapters for the TV streaming (Netflix etc). We were having lots of router DSL disconnections last night and at one stage (around 9:30pm) I disconnected the TV from the Powerline adapter it uses (completely unplugged the adapter from the wall) and then connected the TV via WiFi direct to the router. Signal was weaker, but still works. It might be pure coincidence, but the dropouts stopped from that point in time and we didn't notice anymore for the rest of the evening. We have had these AC adapters installed for a couple of years without any problems, the dropouts are only a very recent event. Could it be a rouge AC adapter? The detective side of me says leave the adapter unplugged for a few days and see if the evening dropouts return, so that's the plan.

Thanks Shane. The NBN technician came and "fixed" an issue they found with the line in the street and we enjoyed a few hours of dropout-free connection. However, as evening approached the dropouts came back with a vengence and at one stage (6pm-7pm) the router would only stay connected for between 30 seconds to 4 minutes. Not sure why evenings are so bad, perhaps we are competing with too many others for the line. I had noticed prior to it being fixed, that the Ookla speedtest would do the download test fine, but when it got to testing the upload speed the internet connection would immediately dropout. Repeated several times with the same result. Wondering if buying a new router might help? The old one is the original Huawei HG569 that came with the switch to NBN.

Any ideas on why my internet has started dropping out a couple of times per hour? Started doing it 3 days ago. Nothing has changed in the house network, no new devices, no changes to the modem, no firmware updates. Affects all devices in the house, TV, computers, tablets and ethernet connected devices (playstation). NBN says there are no issues at the address. Have rebooted the modem dozens of times. Usually reconnects after several minutes loss of connection. Has anything changed at TPG? For zoom meetings, I'm having to hotspot from my phone because the home connection is so unreliable.

The Do Not Call Register is ineffective. Our telephone is registered with them (for many years) and we still get between 10-15 nuisance calls per day. I would encourage TPG to think again about adding call blocking to their landline service or recommend suitable handsets that have this function. (a) it would make TPG landlines very popular, and this would be a good selling point to distinguish TPG from the crowd. (b) it would encourage people to use their landlines which in turn would generate income for TPG. At the moment all incoming calls on our landline are scams and telemarketers (the only exception is a pre-arranged time on Sunday for my parents to call). Not being able to block these scam calls has meant we no longer using our landline for any outgoing calls = no call income for TPG. I also unplug the handset when I'm working at home to stop the ringing.

Thanks Basil, I wasn't able to connect this afternoon, but having now gone back in to check the modem settings I noticed the firmware update you applied has indeed given me the option of manually setting the 5GHz channel number. Have now set it to channel 60 and all 3 Macs are now connecting to the 5GHz network and I am writing this reply using it. Thanks so much for your help, greatly appreciated. Mark

It turns out the 5GHz channel on the Huawei is automatically set and there is no way for users to manually set it. I think it is time to give up on Huawei and switch to an alternative router/modem. I am told the D-Link Taipan AC3200 will allow me to set the 5GHz channel to one that Apple computers can access and will plug into the NBN. Has anyone tried this router/modem on the TPG NBN and will the bundled VOIP phone still work ?

Any chance a firmware update might fix my HG659? I haven't been able to even see my 5GHz network band for several months. Prior to that it would drop frequently. I suspect it is because the HG659 AUTO selects a channel for the 5GHz band that my Macbook Pro doesn't support. Tried rebooting the router many times, changing the 5GHz channel to 20/40, renaming, even upgraded to the latest OSX without any success. Have resorted to running a long ethernet cable across the room to the router. My Samsung Tablet does see and connect to the 5GHz channel, just not any of the Macs.

2 MBPS in the early evening is often what I get with my TPG NBN. Tried lots of things to try and get it faster (new modem, different computer), but with no success. One thing I found did help was logging in to this support page. Speedtest was showing 2.18 MBPS download speed before logging in to TPG support and it then jumped to 19.36 MBPS staright after.

Thanks. Not sure how to access these extra advanced settings. When I click on the Advanced button at the bottom, I am able to change the channel for the 2.4 GHz band from a large pull-down list, but there is no option to change the 5 GHz channel (its pull-down list only has the one option, Automatic). Unfortunately for me the HG659 automatically selects a channel number that I can't connect to with my Mac laptop, iPhone, Surface Pro, Samsung TV or Samsung Tablet. Are there alternative routers where the 5 GHz channel number can be user selected? I suspect the problem may have something to do with conflicting country codes, my router shows up as country code X1, whereas one of the neighbours show as AU.

How do I change the 5GHz channel number on the Huawei HG659 NBN router? At the moment "Automatic" is the only available option. The problem I have is the channel number that the modem automatically selects (136) is not supported by my MacBook Pro and several other tablet devices I have. I would like to change the 5GHz channel number to one that is supported by my devices, but can't figure out a way to do this. Alternatively, is there a different brand of NBN modem I can buy that does allow me to set the channel number so I can actually have a working 5GHz connection.
