Missing VPN Setup on Archer VR1600v v2

Hi Shane

 

I don't use the VoIP feature so I am not concerned about sacrificing it for using my Netgear R7000 with the VPN option. In that case, can I remove the Archer V1600 from the equation altogether and simply connect the R7000 to the modem? If so, can you please confirm the settings for the R7000?

 

Or, do I have to operate the Archer V`1600 in bridge mode connected to the R7000? If so, can you please confirm how to enable bridge mode on the V1600?

Thanks for raising this to us. If you wish to use a 3rd party router for your NBN-HFC, we have an existing thread related to this.

You simply need to set up VLAN ID 2 and connection type should be PPPoE using your TPG Username and Password.

Now I am beginning to understand why TPG gets low Customer Service ratings.

 

This problem has impacted me greatly.  My service is for an IT solution for a medium sized businessI, which I sued to be able easily manage remotely.  Now that the inherent VPN capability of the router has disappeared,  it have to go in and do it in person (until I can set up some dedicated solution  whihc of course will incur costs and more maintenance).    This is not including most of yesterday whihc I spent trying to figure what had happened.

 

TPG - you must to tell people when you remove any service that they been relying on!   Letting them find out themselves is at minimum incompetent,   and, at worst,  culpable.

TPG Rep - Please don't cut & paste any more   the corporate guff about security etc that you have to many other people whchi have also found this a problem.

This is unaccepable. Removing hardware from our system without notice is ridiculous, I will also be taking my business elsewhere. Very dissapointed TPG!

 

If you would understand anything about networks and security, you would conclude that enabling VPN is the way to go.

I too have now become a victim of TPG making changes to my Router configuration without my permission or notification of said changes. 

I use the OpenVPN to connect to my home devices regularly and was disappointed that it wasn't working. After considerable searching I find this post that tells me that my service provider has disabled a service I was using. 

As I have purchased my router you have no right to remove the OpenVPN configuration that comes standard as part of the router configuration. Further more, telling people to set up a separate VPN client on a computer is a larger security risk to personal devices. 

I request that this functionality be enabled and have my device returned to what it should be.

So it's a security issue? I pay a monthly subscription for an Internet service, not an IT security solutions team. 

 

Seeing as though TPG wants to play the role of a cyber security specialists, why not spend time with your elderly customers ensuring they know how to use the Internet safely? I guarantee you there are many more of your customers that fall victim to very avoidable network attacks, compared to those who are hacked via VPN exploitation.

 

Why not at least provide the firmware to unlock the VPN feature for those that want it? I'd argue that most of the people setting a VPN up have some idea of how VPN's work and are able to keep them secure.

Hi Shane,

Has there been any further consideration to restore the VPN function to the Archer VR1600 router ?

 

I am increasingly finding it difficult to believe  the "justification" of security as the reason to remove it.

 

Remotey modifying a Customer's modem (indeed the customer's property) without notice or consent would have to give rise to all sorts of legalities. This is the sort of thing you would expect from hackers or cyber criminals.

 

After migrating to the NBN I had my desktop PC remotely available via a VPN, and was able to power it on and log in with 3 simple steps. Now I am completely stuffed.

 

Can we have the VPN capability returned to our VR1600 modems ?

Following a power outage, my VPN (which I use regularly) no longer worked.

 

On entering the modem config, I note that the option to create a VPN is no longer a menu option.

 

Why is this so, please?  And how do I get it back?

In the best interests of our network and customer security, our vendor and security team have chosen to disable the VPN Server functionality on the TPLink VR1600
 

If you wish to use VPN server functionality, we recommend you install 3rd party software on your PC/server which will address your needs.
